What size skip do I need?
That really depends on what you want to put in it, but if you work on the following basis you shouldn’t go too far wrong.
- 2-yard – This is an ideal size for small house and garden jobs. Capacity is approximately 20-30 bin bags.
- 3 and 4-yard – This is a good size for the bigger household job and just right for bathroom or kitchen refits. Capacity is approximately 30-40 bin bags.
- 6-yard – The choice of builders the length and breadth of the land! This skip will swallow bulky items with ease and should handle all the other rubbish that is generated on site. Capacity is approximately 50-60 bin bags.
- 8-yard – For the customer that needs that bit more room than a 6-yard can offer and also the largest size available for heavy waste (inert/rubble).
- You want bigger?! We also have 12-yard, 14-yard, 16-yard and roll-on roll-off 20 – 40 yard skips available. Please contact us to discuss your needs.
What is the difference between Mixed, Inert, Green Waste and Rubble?
- Mixed - you normally have a mixed skip so that you can put anything in to it and this is general waste such as wood, metal, plastic etc. The sort of rubbish generated during house/garage clearance or on building sites. This is the most expensive form of waste to dispose of.
- Inert – this is soil, clay and dirt which can not be recycled and is used as back fill at landfill, but incurs a tipping charge as it can’t easily be recycled. Much cheaper to dispose of than mixed.
- Rubble – these skips are the cheapest as old concrete, brick rubble and old stone can be recycled. It is screened or crushed to produce hardcore that is used on building sites.
- Green Waste – we can do skips for green waste, but this can’t include tree branches/trunks wider than 6″ diameter, or tree stumps as they can not be processed through the shredders and they have to go to landfill. Consequently, please ring for advice on solutions to deal with green waste.
What can’t I put in a skip?
There is some stuff you can’t just chuck in a skip. That’s because these items are considered hazardous and can’t go to landfill, therefore they must be recycled accordingly. Some of these items, which are listed below, have some really nasty stuff in them which can damage the environment if not disposed of correctly.
So, please do not place any of the below-listed items in a skip.
- Fridges/freezers
- Tyres
- Paint cans
- TVs/monitors
- Asbestos
- Clinical/medical waste
- Florescent tubes
- Solvents
- Liquids
- Oil
- Batteries
- Hazardous/toxic material
- Plasterboard*
*Hang on, I thought I could get rid of plasterboard in a skip?
You can, and we can dispose of your plasterboard for you, but it needs to go into a dedicated receptacle. An easy way to do this is for us to drop a bulk 1.5 ton maxi bag off to you. Or, if you have a lot of it, it may be best to have a dedicated skip for it. Just ring us and we can advise you on the best solution.
I need my skip on the road as I don’t have a drive, what do I do?
You need to give us a ring well in advance of you actually needing the skip as we have to apply for a road permit through the council and it takes a minimum of 10 working days for the permit to be granted. The council’s working days exclude Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays. The process cannot be fast-tracked, so plan ahead!
What access do you need?
We do our best to get the skip where you need it, but we can’t bend the laws of physics! If you have any doubts over whether the access is sufficient for our lorry, please give us a ring and we can chat it through, look on Google street view, or, if necessary, perform a reconnaissance mission!
How do I pay for the skip?
We prefer it if you pay in advance and this can be done over the phone with a credit/debit card, by cheque or in cash. The choice is yours, but we do insist that, for non-account customers, all skips are paid for before we collect the filled skip from you.
How fast can I get a skip and how long is the hire period?
The normal hire period is 10 days, but some people get attached to them! If you are in need of the skip for an extended period of time, please let us know and we will try to accommodate your requirements.
How full can I load my skip?
We are not allowed by law to move a skip that has been loaded higher than the vertical sides.
What are your credentials?
Our credentials including VAT Number and Environment Agency Registration are all in our website footer below.
Finally, what happens to my waste?
We take the waste to our fully accredited Waste Transfer Station (WTS). The WTS is registered with the Environment Agency in the same we that we are in order to move your waste legally. When it reaches the WTS it is sorted but our operatives and recyclable materials are separated where practicable and placed into dedicated receptacles for that waste. Recyclable materials include cardboard, plastics, metals, inert materials, and wood. Some of it is taken off the Island for recycling and the remainder that cannot be recycled is sent to landfill.
